英语演讲与辩论教程◆◆◆(Payne &Prentice,1985:preface).It is regarded as one of themost important skills of diplots Duan Jin,2000).Themotivation behind starting a course in public speaking anddebating and writing a textbook for it is the belief that successfulpublic speakers and debaters are de,not born,and thatstudents can better their future by developing and refining theirpublic speaking and debating skills.This book consists of fifteen chapters.Chapters 1~3 aim atacquainting the reader with the basics of public speaking inEnglish.Chapter 4 deals specifically with tone drills inexpression,which,according to my experience,constitute an2important part of basic training in public speaking.Chapters 5~9 discuss issues related to language.style,and strategies forpresentation in public speaking from both the theoretical andpractical perspectives.Chapters 10~12 present sample speechesfor each of the three types of speech by both Chinese and foreignspeakers of English.Chapters 13~15 have been produced byAndrew Braun,Chen xiang.and me.They are added to thisnew edition with a view to helping with English and non-Englishjors to acquire the basic skills of debating in English.It is hoped that this book will serve as a guide for studentswho are interested in improving their skills of public speakingand debating.They are expected to part with this book muchbetter speakers than when they first got hold of it.Nothing elsewill ke me happier if this proves to be the case.As our ancientsage Confucius said,"What n needs most to administergovernment is that his speech be correct."Indeed,today,if weare not able to give good speeches,failure to get good jobs is not◆◆◆Foreword/the most serious consequence.I guess I will not sound armist if I quote here what Weaver and Ness (1963:prologue)said about good speech:"I am good speech.Were I to fail,n's intelligence wouldlapse to the level of the beasts',each n would dwell apart fromhis fellows,the structure of society would crumble,the fabric oflife itself would fade,and all the processes of civilization wouldcease.”Finally,I feel obliged to ke the followingacknowledgements:Prof.Lian Shuneng,former dean of the College of ForeignLanguages and Cultures,XMU,who is supervising my study3and research towards a Ph.D.degree,Prof.Yang Renjing,Director of the Institute for Research in Foreign Languages &Literature,XMU,Prof.Yang Xinzhang,now dean of theCollege of Foreign Languages and Cultures,XMU,and Prof.Lin Yuru,former head of the Department of Foreign Languages&Literature,have all been very supportive while I was writing,using,and revising this book.During my second revision,Prof.Xu Qichao of College of Foreign Languages &Cultures,SouthChina Norl University,Prof.Lin Qingyang of ForeignLanguage Department,Putian College,and my colleague MrZhang Wang helped me in collecting sample speeches.Last butnot least,Ms Jiang Hong,Miss Yang Zhuo,and Mr Xi Ruijia,MA students of English at XMU,aided me in my literaturesearch.To all of them I feel deeply indebted.Also,during the past six years I benefited from teachingfour classes of MA students and six undergraduate classes.My
