Science,Reform andPoliticsin VictorianBritainThe Social ScienceAssociation 1857-1886LAWRENCE GOLDMANCAMBRIDGEmore infortion-.cambridge.org/052133053XThis page intentionally left blankSCIENCE,REFORM,AND POLITICSIN VICTORIAN BRITAINThe Social Science Association 1857-1886Science,Reform,and Politics is a study ofthe relationship between socialthought,social policy and politics in Victorian Britain.Goldnfocuses on a rerkable organisation,the National Associationfor the Promotion of Social Science,known as the Social ScienceAssociation.For three decades this served as a forum for the discus-to governments,and its history discloses how social policy was dein these years.Its participants included ny notablefigures,amongthem politicians (for example,Gladstone and Russell),intellectu-als (Mill and Rin),public administrators (Chadwick and Kay-neering feminists of the age (Barbara Bodichon and Bessie RaynerParkes).The Association had influence over policy and legislationon tters as diverse as public health,crime and punishment,sec-ondary education,class and industrial relations,and women's legaland social encipation.The SSA has an important place in thehistory of social thought and sociology,showing the complex roots ofthese disciplines in the non-academic milieu of nineteenth-centuryreform.Its influence in the United States and Europe allows for acomparative approach to political and intellectual development inthis period.LAWRENCE GOLDMAN is Lecturer in Modern History at the Uni-versity ofOxford and a Fellow of St Peter's College.He wasawardedthe Sara Norton Prize (University of Cambridge)for research inAmerican History in 1982,and the Thirlwall Prize and Medal forhistorical dissertation (University of Cambridge)in 1985.He is theauthor of Dons and Workers:Oxford and Adult Education since 1850.
